‘A PALLET FOR THE SENSES…’

I had the thrill and pleasure of being a guest at “La Bergerie”  a few years ago.  It’s fair to say that my senses were filled with French charm and country elegance;  from the decor to the magnificence of the surrounding countryside. One of my favourite spots on the property is what has been dubbed the “Canadian Chalet”. It is a little one-room getaway located at the top of the hill behind the house, that’s a perfect spot to take a sketch book, palette and brushes…a place to spend many happy hours painting and sketching, or to watching the sunrises and sunsets.

The taste, texture, presentation and preparation of the food by my hosts certainly entertained my “palate” and elicited many oohs and aahs of delight.  There is something so earthy and organic about plucking fresh, juicy figs right from the trees by the pool, or fresh herbs from the garden and then tasting them served in an original dish that I’d never experienced before….cooked to perfection!  And the cheeses and breads from the local shops, what can I say; nobody knows cheese and bread like the French!

And still, there is nothing that can compare to sitting on the south terrace,  sipping local wine and watching the moon rise over Mont Ventoux. Or hiking Les Dentelles de Montmirail at sunset and witnessing the breathtaking vistas warmed by the red hues of the setting sun.

I loved the simplest things, like waking up in the morning to the sun streaming in through my open window and hearing the chirping of the birds, or the aroma of the lavender as we harvested it. Or visiting the early morning markets and then taking an afternoon dip in the pool; these memories will linger in my mind forever.

Patrice and Jillian are gracious, solicitous hosts who made me feel at home and at ease and who went out of their way to make my stay special and memorable.  Thank you for opening your home to me and for all of the wonderful memories.  Now if I could only capture the experience on canvas and do it justice!
