“We Were Especially Fond Of The Box Of Cool Rosé Wine That’s Always In The Refrigerator…”
We have visited the delightful Provencale “La Bergerie” – home of Patrice and Jillian Bret – twice. We went once in June 2005 pre-renovation and again after the renovation/ expansion in May 2008. Both times we had lovely visits and many fond memories.
La Bergerie is a beautiful example of rustic elegance, surrounded by vineyards and cherry trees. It is a spacious home with many levels and archways connecting the rooms, but the centrepiece of the home is the spacious and well stocked kitchen where Patrice concocts his eclectic masterpieces.
We were especially fond of the box of cool rosé wine that’s always in the refrigerator and the many carafes of wine that accompanied our lunches outside on the patio. Rosé is particularly good on hot days – even during the mistral winds! And after several glasses we were well prepared for our imminent naps in the hammocks.
But it wasn’t all rest and naps: we took many excursions; hiking at Les Dentelle Montmirail, sight seeing in Roussillon, lunches in Vaison la Romaine, Gordes, and the wonderful Hotel de Crillon la Brave; and then fabulous dinners at Le Mesclin in Seguret, and Restaurant l’Oustalet in Gigondas. We especially liked shopping at the weekly markets in the surrounding villages, where Patrice introduced us to his favourite stalls and vendors.
And….. to make up for all the eating and wine-sipping, Patrice took us for hikes and runs around Roaix and the surrounding countryside. I went for the infamous bike-trip up the Mt. Ventoux, and of course, we can’t forget our morning workouts on the patio.
We are so looking forward to our next visit this summer.
